Hardware

You will need access to the following basic hardware:

  • Computer - sorry, but you can't create a web page without one. However, you don't have to spend a lot of money on a fancy one, you don't really have to even own it, (but it helps) You can borrow a friend's computer, visit your public library or community college computer lab, or like many of us, we use our computer at work. Yes my boss actually knows. I'm not going to go into detail about what type of computer to get. Most on the market are adequate for basic web page design. Don't even get started with the Mac-PC debate. Both are fine. Use what you are most comfortable with.

  • Scanner - a scanner is a devise that allows you to transfer a hard copy of a photo or document, to digital form. See below for more details.

  • Digital Camera - a digital camera is almost a necessity if you are creating a web page. Can you imagine reading page after page of text without pictures to break it up. You don't necessary need to own the camera. Recruit others in your chapter to take pictures for you. But with the price of digital cameras dropping every year, you can get a really good camera for around $100.

  • Internet connection - I'm also not going to cover internet connects except to say, you need an internet connection to upload your web page files to the ISP and you need a connection to view the final product on the web. I do highly recommend that you use a high speed connection like DSL/Cable, etc. A dial up connection will do the work, but it will take a long time and often time out (or end the transfer unexpectedly).

Scanners

  • Scanners have gotten inexpensive to own. The HP Scanjet G3010 will cost you about $100.
  • Make sure that the scanner you get is labeled as a Photo Scanner. This will allow you scan photos as a better quality than those scanners made for just documents.

  • Scanners will come with graphics software like Photoshop Elements that will allow you to crop, rotate, and transform the pictures you scan. See Software for more information on graphics software.

Digital Cameras

  • Digital cameras have come way down in price over the years. It's almost impossible to find a camera for sale under one megapixel. For web pages, buy a camera with a minimum 2 megapixel, although you can get a very good quality camera at 7 megapixels for about $150. Again shop around. The internet is probably the best buy.
  • Digital cameras don't have to be complicated to work well. Most Point and Shoot cameras take excellent pictures.

  • Shop around for a camera that feels right. Visit local camera stores and try the camera out before you buy it. Some cameras have a delay from the time you click the button until the picture is captured. That's OK if you are shooting scenery, but if you are trying to get that perfect shot of an airplane in flight, it will cause you to miss the picture. Try them out and shop around.
