SAFETY THRU EDUCATION
(Setember 1998 Newsletter)

As I talked to a friend about this column, he quickly told me that SAFETY is easy, it IS DOING THE RIGHT THING! Like putting enough fuel in the airplane so that you can complete the flight! Like actually having a map so you kind of know where you're going! Like checking the weather so you know what to expect when you get there or if you should even go there. Like making sure that all the big things on your airplane work. I asked him to define the BIG things. Like the engine. How many people still fly the airplane when they know the engine is running rough or a needed item is inoperative. (The point here was a friend who tried to use an autopilot that was not fully functioning to shoot an instrument approach. It never caught the localizer needle for the landing approach and proceeded to fly into a mountain). People actually think that things will get better and/or fix themselves. (It reminded me of this man's actual comment aired on the radio during the recent hurricane on the east coast, he said, as the storm was still approaching, that if it gets any worse I am getting my  family out of here! Well, how do you think it is going to get any better before the storm). In the real world - civilian, military, corporate or airline - we all experience some time out of the "safety zone". That is why the military has the best and sharpest men and women. That is why airlines and corporations have two drivers so someone will ask the question "Why are we doing this?" "Is this the RIGHT thing to do?" Will we get back in the "SAFETY ZONE"?
